Where Do Our Residents Go Next?

December 3, 2018

Family medicine residents who graduate from the University of Minnesota find themselves in a unique position to shape their careers according to their medical and personal interests. A leading family medicine training program in the country in terms of full-spectrum education and excellent faculty, the UMN prepares generations of family physicians to practice in a variety of settings - urban, rural, and global.

Of our 52 residency graduates in 2018...
  • 39 (75%) stayed in Minnesota
  • 6 went to other Midwest states (Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota, Missouri, and Wisconsin)
  • 6 went West (Alaska, California, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming)
  • 1 went East (Rhode Island)
  • 3 graduates went into fellowships (OB, Geriatrics and Sports Medicine)
  • 7 went into urgent care or hospital-based positions
  • 42 went to private practice, group practice or locum tenens

However, year after year, most of our residents choose to stay in Minnesota after graduating, with the vast majority going into group, hospital, or private practice in local health systems or medical centers. The rest choose to continue their training in specialized fellowships.

Why Minnesota? It could be the sprawling lakes and trails, the vibrant arts and cultural scene, or the fact that Minnesota was named one of the Happiest (and Least Stressed) States in America. Quality of life here always ranks high, and people report high community engagement, social support, and voter participation.

It’s also a great place to be in family medicine.

“I decided to stay in Minnesota because of the great learning environment the state provides,” says Dr. Okonkwo, a graduate of the UMMC residency program who is now pursuing a fellowship in geriatric medicine.

Others have found that Minnesota just feels like home. “My kids are going to a great school here,” says Dr. Tsvilia, a 2018 graduate who has decided to stay and work for a private clinic where “everyone is involved in the process of providing excellent care. The doctors working at my clinic have been here for many years, which speaks to its great climate.”

Wherever our residents end up, they all agree their experiential and didactic training at the University of Minnesota - as well as the relationships they formed with their cohort, faculty, and patients - prepared them well for a life in family medicine.

“I can't be more appreciative of my residency program,” says Dr. Tsvilina. “I was trained with the highest standards and developed confidence that helps me with my new job.”

“The University of Minnesota is a great academic environment filled with different learning opportunities,” says Dr. Okonkwo. “I loved the diversity in patient populations and specialties here. The providers’ passion for teaching is also something that speaks volumes.”
